Photos from modern phones are often several megabytes each, which is far more than most websites, forms and email attachments need. Compress image on Xon File shrinks your photos so they're quicker to send and fit within upload limits. Add up to 30 images, pick a level, and download the smaller versions without signing up for anything.
How to compress an image
- Add your images. On a computer, drag them into the box; on a phone, tap "Select files" and pick them from your gallery or files.
- Choose a level: Recommended, Less compression, or Extreme.
- Start the tool.
- Download your compressed photos. A single image downloads as a JPG. Several images come back together in one ZIP.
You can upload JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, GIF and TIFF files, up to 30 at a time and 100 MB per upload.
How the image size reducer works
The tool does two things. First, if a photo is very large, it scales it down so its longest side is no bigger than the limit for the level you chose. Then it saves the image as an optimized JPG, a format that keeps photos small while still looking natural.
| Level | Longest side at most | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended | 2000 px | Everyday use: email, forms, sharing, most websites |
| Less compression | 3000 px | Photos you may print or want to crop later |
| Extreme | 1280 px | Strict upload limits and quick sharing on slow connections |
The resizing only applies to very large photos. If your image is already smaller than the limit, it isn't stretched bigger.
The output is always JPG
Whatever format you upload, the compressed file is a JPG. For photos this is what you want, because JPG is the usual format for pictures and opens everywhere.
There's one side effect to know about. JPG can't store transparency, so any transparent areas in a PNG, WEBP or GIF become white. If you're compressing a logo or a cut-out product image that needs a see-through background, this tool will fill that background with white. For a change of format without compressing, use the Image converter instead, which can save as PNG or WEBP.
Common reasons to reduce image size
Online forms and applications
Exam registrations, job portals and visa applications often limit photo uploads to a few hundred kilobytes. Compress JPG files here on Extreme or Recommended, and they're far more likely to go through. If the form also asks for exact pixel dimensions, set those with Resize image, which lets you type a custom width.
Email and messaging
Attaching ten full-size photos to an email can push you over Gmail's attachment limit. Compressed photos attach without trouble and are easier for the other person to open on mobile data.
Websites and online shops
Small businesses selling online need product photos that load quickly. Large images slow pages down, especially for customers on phones. Compressing a batch of 30 product shots at once gets them ready for upload.
Class groups and school projects
Teachers and students often share photos of classwork or a science project in a class WhatsApp group. Compressing them first means everyone in the group downloads smaller files, which matters for people using mobile data.
Saving storage
If your phone or laptop is filling up, compressing old photos you want to keep (but don't need at full size) frees up space.
Tips
- Keep your originals. Compression and resizing remove detail, and you can't get it back from the smaller file.
- Start with Recommended. Use Extreme only when a size limit forces you to.
- Photos of documents can lose sharpness on Extreme. Zoom in to check that small text is readable before you submit.
- Putting photos into a PDF? Turn them into a PDF with JPG to PDF, and if that file is still big, use Compress PDF on it.
Privacy
Your images are processed on our server and deleted as soon as the compressed files are sent back to you. We don't store them or share them. No watermark or logo is added to your photos.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free to compress images?
Yes. The tool is free to use, and you don't need to sign up or log in. Your compressed photos have no watermark.
Can I compress photos on my iPhone or Android phone?
Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser and tap "Select files" to pick photos from your gallery. When it's done, the JPG or ZIP downloads to your phone.
Why is my PNG now a JPG?
The tool always saves results as JPG, because JPG keeps photos small. If your PNG had a transparent background, that area is now white.
Will compressing make my photo blurry?
Some detail is always lost when a photo is compressed. Less compression keeps the most, allowing up to 3000 px on the longest side. Extreme scales large images down to 1280 px, so you're more likely to notice softer detail if you zoom in a long way.
How many images can I compress at once?
Up to 30 images in one upload, with a maximum of 100 MB per upload. They all use the same level and come back as one ZIP file.
Which image formats can I upload?
You can upload JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, GIF and TIFF files. Whatever you upload, every result is saved as a JPG, so look again at any image that had a transparent background before you use it.
Does it make small images bigger?
No. Only very large photos are scaled down. An image that's already smaller than the level's limit keeps its dimensions and is just saved as an optimized JPG.
