Remove background

Cut out the subject and make the background transparent.

Product photos taken on a kitchen table, a profile picture with a messy bedroom behind it, a pet portrait you want to put on a birthday card: these are the pictures people usually want to remove the background from. Upload the photo here and an AI model finds the main subject, cuts it out and makes everything else transparent. You can also ask for a plain white background instead.

How to remove the background from a photo

  1. Add your photos. JPG, PNG and WEBP all work, and you can add up to 10 at once.
  2. Choose the output: "Transparent PNG" or "White background (JPG)".
  3. Start the tool. A single photo downloads on its own; several come back together as a ZIP.

On a computer you can drag the images onto the page. On a phone, tap "Select files" and pick them from your gallery.

Transparent PNG or white background?

The choice depends on where the picture is going next.

Output What you get Good for
Transparent PNG The subject on an empty, see-through background Logos, stickers, designs in Canva or PowerPoint, placing the subject on a new background
White background (JPG) The subject on solid white Online shop listings, catalogues, forms and profiles that want a plain light background

A transparent PNG keeps your options open, since you can drop it onto any colour or photo later. A white JPG is ready to upload right away and works on sites that don't handle transparency well.

Photos that work well

The background remover does its best work when there's one clear subject that stands apart from what's behind it. People, products and pets are the classic cases. With a person standing in front of a wall or a shoe on a table, the model can usually tell what you meant.

It has a harder time when the subject blends into the background, when there are several subjects overlapping, or when the "main" thing isn't obvious, like a wide shot of a busy street. Good light helps too, and so does a background that's a different colour from the subject. A photo taken near a window will usually cut out more cleanly than a dark one taken at night.

Hair, fur and fine edges

Fine detail is the hardest part of any cut-out. Loose hair, fluffy fur, lace and thin plant stems may not come out cleanly, and you might see a few strands missing or a soft halo around the edge. For a profile picture this is rarely noticeable. For a large print, zoom in on the edges before you use it.

Where people use it

Small businesses selling on Instagram, WhatsApp or online marketplaces use it to give every product the same clean white background, which makes a shop page look tidy without a photo studio. Students put cut-out images into presentations and posters so a picture sits neatly on a coloured slide.

It's also handy for personal things, like a profile photo for a CV or LinkedIn with a plain background. A transparent logo for a small club or church event is another common job. Some application forms ask for a photo on a plain white background, and the white JPG option gets you most of the way there. Check the form's own rules for size and framing.

Getting the picture ready afterwards

A cut-out often needs one more step before it's used. Resize image brings it down to the width a website or form asks for. If a site won't accept PNG files, Image converter can switch it to JPG, though transparent areas turn white when saved as JPG. To bring a large file under an email or upload limit, Compress image shrinks it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the background remover free?

Yes. You can remove backgrounds without paying and without signing up. Each batch can hold up to 10 photos.

Can I remove the background on my phone?

Yes. It works in the browser on Android and iPhone. Tap "Select files", choose your photos from the gallery and download the results to your phone.

How do I get a transparent background?

Choose "Transparent PNG" as the output. The subject stays and everything around it becomes transparent, so you can place it on any background later.

Why are some edges of hair missing?

Hair and fur are fine, thin and often close in colour to the background, so the model can miss a few strands or leave a soft edge. Photos with good light and a plain background behind the subject usually give cleaner edges.

Why did the first photo take longer?

That can happen when the tool hasn't been used for a while. It's normal, and the following photos usually go faster.

Can I use it for product photos?

Yes, product photos are one of the best uses. Shoot the item on a plain surface with good light, then choose the white background option for a clean, consistent look across your listings.
