When a video won't play on your phone or an upload form rejects it, the format is often the reason. This free video converter changes your file into MP4, MOV or WEBM so it works where you need it. You upload the video, choose the new format and download the converted file.
Which format should you convert to?
| Convert to | What it's good for |
|---|---|
| MP4 | The safe default. Uses H.264 and plays almost everywhere: phones, computers, TVs, websites and chat apps. |
| MOV | Apple's video format, handy for editing on a Mac or iPhone. |
| WEBM | A format made for the web, used on many websites and in web browsers. |
For most people the answer is MP4. If you're not sure what the person receiving the file uses, MP4 is the format most likely to play without trouble.
How to convert a video
- Tap "Select files" on your phone, or drag videos onto the page on a computer. You can add MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI and 3GP files.
- Under "Convert to", pick MP4, MOV or WEBM.
- Start the conversion and keep the page open until it finishes.
- Download your video. One file downloads directly, and if you converted several, they come back together in a ZIP.
You can convert up to 30 videos in one go, as long as the whole upload is within 100 MB. On a computer, drop all the files onto the page together. On a phone, select several videos from your gallery after tapping "Select files".
Common conversions
MOV to MP4
iPhones and some cameras save videos as MOV. Those files play fine on Apple devices but can cause problems on some Windows computers and upload forms. Converting MOV to MP4 is the usual fix.
MKV to MP4
MKV files often come from screen recorders and some editing programs. Many phones, TVs and websites don't accept MKV, so turning MKV to MP4 lets you play or share the video without installing a special player.
AVI and 3GP to MP4
AVI is an older Windows format, and 3GP comes from older phones. If you've found family videos on an old memory card or hard drive, converting them to MP4 makes them easy to watch on a modern phone or send to relatives.
Any video to WEBM
If you're adding a video to your own website, WEBM can be a good choice. Convert to WEBM and keep an MP4 copy too, in case a visitor's device prefers it. Not every phone or editing app opens WEBM files, so for sending a video to people directly, MP4 is still the better pick.
Who uses a video converter
Students convert recordings so they meet the format a school portal asks for when submitting a project. Office workers convert a screen recording to MP4 before putting it in a PowerPoint presentation or attaching it to an email. Small business owners change product videos into MP4 so they upload smoothly to social media and online shops. At home, people convert videos from an old camera or phone so everyone in the family can watch them. Teachers who collect assignment videos in a mix of formats can convert the whole batch to MP4, so every file plays the same way on the classroom computer.
Tips and limits
Converting changes the format. It doesn't make a video smaller on purpose, and in some cases the new file can be larger than the original. If you need a smaller file, use Compress video, which re-encodes to MP4 and can lower the resolution.
Converting also can't improve picture quality. A blurry or low resolution video will look the same in its new format.
Check the size of your videos before uploading. The limit is 100 MB per upload, so long recordings may need to be shortened first. Trim video can cut out the parts you don't need.
If you only need the audio from a video, skip the video converter and use Video to MP3 or the Audio converter instead.
Privacy
Your videos are processed on our server and deleted as soon as the converted file is sent back to you. Nothing is stored or shared. You don't need an account, and we don't add a watermark or logo to your video. The tool works in your browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook, so there's no software to install.
Frequently asked questions
Is this video converter free?
Yes. You can convert video files for free without signing up. There's no watermark on your converted videos.
How do I convert MOV to MP4?
Upload your MOV file, choose MP4 under "Convert to", and start the conversion. Download the MP4 when it's ready. You can do several MOV files at once.
Can I convert videos on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser, tap "Select files" and choose videos from your gallery or files. The converted video saves to your phone.
Which formats can I upload?
MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI and 3GP. You can convert them to MP4, MOV or WEBM.
Will converting reduce the quality of my video?
Each conversion re-encodes the video, so it can't add detail that wasn't there. Convert from the original file each time, rather than converting a converted copy again and again.
Why is my converted file bigger than the original?
Different formats store video in different ways, so the size can go up or down. If size matters, run the result through Compress video.
How many videos can I convert at once?
Up to 30 files in one upload, within the 100 MB limit. Several converted files download together as a ZIP.
